A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
