In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
