The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Less than one in 10 people that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its initial guidance on the medications.

Given more than one billion people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is calling for broader and more equitable availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per estimates, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with comprehensive and lifelong treatment," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to broad availability to the injections that can help people shift considerable weight, says the agency.

Despite the present best projected case, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The advice encourages countries and companies to increase availability, via approaches like voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of countries in 2026.

These medications replicate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and increase feelings of fullness so users reduce food intake.
