The Game's Dodge Roll Merits to Be Celebrated
Having spent time with the popular action RPG, or most other 3D action game, chances are you're familiar with the fantastic mechanic known as the “evasion roll.” This evasion technique enables your hero to perform a front, lateral, or rearward ground roll to avoid incoming harm and move away from opponents. Seems useful, wouldn't you say?
This rolling move, though, has received significant backlash, not simply due to the tumbling; some have dubbed it foolish, a cop-out, and an unrealistic move — and in some cases, I agree. You should see me rolling around nearby enemy groups in The Witcher 3 — can't touch this Geralt! But Elden Ring's evasion move represents the evasion to surpass every other evasion moves, and let me explain.
In Elden Ring's case, the designers identified an excellent method to address all opinions claiming the maneuver is overly simple: just grant all foes excessive power, triple that, and each player character who ventures close them will appreciate deeply because of their evasion move, myself included. When the stakes are this high, successfully rolling to victory comes across as a triumph, not a cheat.
No different defensive move in this RPG matches this sense of satisfaction and consistency, as quick dashes provide minimal movement and blocking attempts are readily overcome by powerful foes. One player advised jumping as a go-to game evasion method, but besides failing to offer ideal movement, It wasn't clear to me getting my skull smashed in might boost my prospects of defeating bosses (skill issue, perhaps).
Learning the Move
While the dodge roll grants reprieve in an incredibly challenging experience, it requires practice. First of all, this title's dodge roll only triggers a period of immunity after you release the evasion key, which hinders a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dire situations. Additionally, although it may transport you away from enemies, it's far more effective to use it as an opportunity to get closer, ideally to their rear, and land some hits. In conclusion, it remains necessary to comprehend and predict opponent moves, since evading too early of a prolonged preparation may end your invincibility ahead of the attack striking… resulting in severe damage.
A Well-Designed Feature
While dodge-rolling in quick succession may look a bit ridiculous (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't practically possible in Elden Ring. Naturally, that doesn't render it a believable battle technique — which is precisely why it would be terrifying to experience it in a product like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — yet we're discussing a flashy fantasy title under discussion, thus why worry?
Like any proper rolling dodge, this title's dodge motion is enhanced with a brief tumbling leap at the beginning, providing a dynamic sensation as opposed to plopping the player downward. Depending on your gear, the maneuver might appear super agile or moderately cumbersome, but it remains swifter and more seamless than the dodge rolls used in the earlier games. Admittedly, you may embed your large weapon in the dirt if you're carrying one, but that's on you for avoiding alternative arms (Just kidding — don't play the game using ranged options).
Ideal Equilibrium
The game's dodging mechanic forms an optimal harmony between obstacle and possibility, offering hope of victory while endangering that very prospect at the slightest mistake. Perfect this move, and you'll be rewarded with not only success, but satisfaction.
