PSG Edges Marseille in a Shootout to Lift Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the net early on.

However, the southern French side struck twice late to take a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to complete a convincing shootout victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the past thirteen years.
